Duration: 10-15 minutes

Welcome to a simple yet profound exercise designed to immerse you in the art of creating for the sake of creating. This activity focuses on letting go of the end result and embracing the process itself, helping you fall into a mindset of freedom, play, and exploration.

Materials Needed:

  • Paper (any size, preferably something you’re comfortable tearing)
  • Mark-making tools (e.g., pencils, pens, charcoal, pastels, markers)
  • Optional: a timer set for 10 minutes

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Set Up Your Space: Find a quiet, comfortable area where you won’t be interrupted. Lay out your materials, ensuring you have a few colors and tools to choose from.

  2. Breathe and Center: Take a deep breath. Let go of any thoughts about creating a “good” piece of art. This activity is about the experience, not the outcome.

  3. Start Mark Making: Begin to make marks on your paper. Let your hand move intuitively—scribble, hatch, make spirals or jagged edges. Experiment with dynamic marks: press hard, go light, make sweeping or tiny motions. Use different colors as you go, choosing whatever feels right in the moment.

  4. Focus on the Sensation: Notice the feeling of the tool on paper, the scratch of a pencil, or the softness of a pastel. Let your mind wander into the rhythm of the movement and sound, fully immersed in the present.

  5. Change Tools and Colors: Without thinking too much, switch between colors and tools. Embrace randomness and spontaneity, allowing the act of creating to become a meditation.

  6. Embrace Imperfection: If you start to judge what you’re making, acknowledge that thought and let it pass. Redirect your focus to the joy of motion and color.

After the Timer:

  1. Pause and Reflect: Once the timer goes off, step back and look at what you’ve made, but only for a moment. Appreciate the energy and effort that went into it without critique.

  2. Ripping the Artwork: Take your piece and begin to rip it up into pieces. As you do, acknowledge that the value lay in the process—not in the result. This act is symbolic of freeing yourself from perfectionism and attachment.

  3. Close the Session: Take another deep breath. Notice how you feel now compared to when you started. This exercise is a reminder that art is a practice, not a product. Carry that sense of freedom into your next creative endeavor.

This activity will help you connect with the present moment, exploring your creativity with no strings attached. Enjoy the process, and let the act of creating be its own reward!
