Traveling to Arizona in the summer can feel like venturing into the seventh circle of hell. I recently had to make such a trip for family business, and it was crucial to prepare for the extreme heat so I could stay focused on the tasks at hand. Here’s what I packed to make my life easier and ensure I could handle the sweltering conditions:

1. Sunscreen: Your Best Friend

First and foremost, sunscreen is non-negotiable. My favorite sunscreen is from the brand Vacation. I love their spray-on sunscreen, which I use liberally on my face and shoulders whenever I start feeling too hot. It’s lightweight, easy to apply, and offers great protection.

2. Big Sun Visor: Embrace the Mom Era

A big sun visor is a game-changer. Not only does it provide excellent shade, but it also gives off serious “Mom era” vibes, which I’m totally here for. If you’re over 25 and using retinol on your face, it’s even more important to protect your skin barrier from the harsh sun. A sun visor is an excellent addition to your sun protection arsenal.

3. Hydration: Water and Electrolytes

Staying hydrated is absolutely essential. Always make sure you have access to water. Personally, I like to add electrolytes to my water. Some people might be skeptical about the benefits of electrolytes, but as someone who has passed out from heat stroke before, I can assure you they are crucial. Electrolytes help maintain the balance of fluids in your body, which is vital in extreme heat.

If you start to feel fatigued in the sun, have something a little salty, like potato chips, and keep sipping water throughout the day. The salt helps your body retain water, and the combination can help stave off the debilitating effects of heat.

4. Moisturizer, Chapstick, Oils: Don’t Be Crusty

Don’t forget to keep lotion, chapstick, and cuticle oil with you at all times. The dry Arizona heat can be incredibly harsh on your skin, leaving it parched and uncomfortable. The last thing you want is to be crusty and dealing with dry, cracked skin while managing business. A good moisturizer, nourishing chapstick, and hydrating cuticle oil will keep your skin soft and healthy, ensuring you look and feel your best despite the arid climate.

5. Slow Down: Adjust Your Pace & Keep a Good Attitude

Lastly, walk slow. Don’t assume you can operate at Northeast Coast speeds in the Arizona desert. The heat demands a slower, more deliberate pace. Take your time, and don’t rush.

Maintaining a positive attitude is key. Smile when you feel yourself slipping into a crappy mood. A good attitude can make a huge difference when you’re dealing with the stress of family business and the oppressive heat.

Conclusion

Traveling to Arizona for family business is challenging, especially in the summer heat. By packing the right essentials and managing your expectations, you can make the experience more manageable. Remember your sunscreen, sun visor, water with electrolytes, salty snacks, and, most importantly, a good attitude. Walk slow, take it easy, and you’ll be able to focus on the family business you need to attend to without succumbing to the scorching temperatures.
